fullsize windows, mouse doesn't work.

ok, i've had this problem for a very long time, and it has been getting me really angry but i've ignored it. I can't take it anymore. Whenever i open a fullscreen window (e.g. a game), depending on the program (about 50% chance for tremulous) (100% for enemy territory quake wars demo, i want to play so that's why i can't ignore it any longer), the screen will briefly flash between the desktop and the game, and the mouse won't work anymore, it stays in the top-left corner.
i've noticed two things. this only happens when the game is at maximum resolution (1280x1024 on my monitor), and when it does, all my desktop effect shortcuts work, they don't when it works fine (which is good).
can anyone help with this, or has anyone experienced the same problem?

Are you using compiz?If so please go to compizconfig manager, workarounds plugin and untick legacy fullscreen support.And try again.

nope, now instead of flashing between desktop and window i get a windowed... window instead of a fullscreen window and i have to close using alt-f4 anyway.
anyone else have any ideas?
