    I'm using an onboard sound chip (VIA VT1708S on Asus M4A785TD-V EVO).
    There are issues which got resolved in Alsa 1.0.22 lately.

    I tried to install the newest Alsa by hand, but got nothing than a broken driver (to be exact: the driver builds fine, but I don't get any mixer controls).

    I don't know if there is a problem with kernel dependencies or a flaw directly in the Alsa system.

    Soundcheck ore anyone else,
    did you try installing Alsa 1.0.22 yet?
    Does anyone have similar troubles?

    Hi!, this is my first time in a linux forum.
    I'm trying to get my optical out going with no success so far.
    I have a M3N78-VM motherboard with the VT1708b Codec.
    I'm also running Linux Mint (Helena), i know it's not plain Ubuntu, but it's pretty close right?

    I also downloaded and run the alsa-driver-1.0.21 script and it took a long while but finished with no errors at all, rebooted and here's a little output from alsa:

    In your audio program you want to specify it needs to use the 'iec958' output device (digital output). That might also be possible by fiddling with your ~/.asoundrc

    I do own the very mobo too (Asus M3N78-VM) and I got the digital out working. In fact it works all the time, but seems to be wrongly routed.

    The board has an internal digital I/O connector which is used by default.
    I just built a connector for it - it works flawlessly.

    If it is possible for you to use a digital I/O rather than the optical one, go and get an adapter for the pins onboard (or build one yourself).
    Or file a bug report for the ALSA guys...

    I installed this script last night and have been having problems.

    First some system info:
    -I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu (9.04)
    -This is on a Gateway laptop T-1631

    My laptop is shutting down "randomly". Basically this came up like this:

    I run this script, fine. I restart my computer, fine. I log into Ubuntu, fine. Then the problem starts: when everything is nearly loaded, it shuts down (power just cuts out). I restarted it and the problem got worse. Everytime I restart, it shut down faster and faster, until it was shutting down just 11 seconds after start up (before even getting to grub loader to allow me to choose my OS). Even if I'm in the BIOS, it will still restart.

    I'm not familiar enough with the workings of this script or computer hardware to know what is going on, but this never happened before and it happened right after running this script.

    Another weird thing: sometimes it starts up in windows without restarting. What I have found is that if I manage to log onto windows, I'm home free. It won't restart (as far as I know), and I have had windows up and running for about an hour (normally this problem shows up within seconds, so this leads me to believe it will run indefinietly in windows).

    Ideas?

    I didn't know about that connection, but it bugs me! I shouldn't have to use other hardware (even if it's a couple of $$). I know it should work. Still, Thank you so much.

    You're right! My SPDIFs outputs were muted.

    Anyway, I unmuted them and nothing changed.
    I really don't know what to do.
