    Re: ALSA Upgrade Script

thanks, worked for me too, but NOT before i reinstalled alsa-base:

    last four steps as given:
    4. sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-1.0.23-2.sh -d
    5. sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-1.0.23-2.sh -c
    6. sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-1.0.23-2.sh -i
    7. sudo shutdown -r 0

then re-install alsa, and reboot again:

    8. sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
    9. sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils gdm ubuntu-desktop
    10. sudo shutdown -r 0

would be nice to understand why...

i did this twice, giving me back sound.
in the second instance, after the last kernel upgrade (to 2.6.32-24 of 10.04 64-bit), no
sound cards were being recognised at all, which seems worth reporting.

    Question Re: ALSA Upgrade Script

I don't understand, why ubuntu is updating the kernel, when I use the hold-option for

    linux-headers-2.6.32-24
    linux-headers-2.6.32-24-generic
    in synaptic.

    Re: ALSA Upgrade Script

^Those are just the headers, you need to hold the actual linux-image too. As to why the script "broke" your desktop effects... no idea. Might have been a side effect of updating your packages.
What would happen if your hard disk died right now?

    Re: ALSA Upgrade Script

This script appears to have trashed my sound system, which surprises me because I used it without problems when I was running Jaunty. Currently running Lucid with the stock kernel on a Lenovo Y550 with Realtek ALC272 sound.

After upgrading using the script there was still sound from the laptop speakers however I no longer can use the hardware volume buttons and when I try to open Preferences>Sound I get a message saying "Waiting for sound system to respond". I tried several hda-intel models to no avail.

So after giving up and running the restore option I am back to running ALSA 1.0.22, but I still have the same problems! Can't open Preferences>Sound at all, no hardware volume buttons, no headphone output (which is why I tried the upgrade in the first place).

This is a bummer, especially because sound worked out of the box with Karmic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: ALSA Upgrade Script

Rebooted and now I have no sound at all, and even my hardware brightness keys have stopped working.

    Help please!

Just wanted to say a very enthusiastic thank you for the script. It worked beautifully.

    Re: ALSA Upgrade Script

OK, I ran the install script again and added a new hda-intel model option which has got me laptop speaker sound again. However, I still can't open Preferences>Sound and my volume and brightness buttons are still out of commission. Would updating my kernel possibly solve at least the hardware button problem?

    Re: ALSA Upgrade Script

@treesurf, your issue sounds like pulseaudio is borked. Try removing the user files it creates to generate fresh ones:
    Code:
    cd ~/
    rm -rf .pulse*
Then log out and back in.

    Re: ALSA Upgrade Script

    Temujin, you rock, thank you!

Sound>Preferences now comes back up again, my headphone jack works finally, and the volume buttons are functional again.

However, the brightness keys are still not working. And sadly, the ALSA update did not enable the subwoofer on the laptop as I had hoped, but that's not the fault of the script of course.
