    It should be possible to completely automate this (screensaver automatically turns off whenever firefox is using flash) using /proc, a daemon and the gconf settings above. I'll write a HOWTO later today and post a link to it in this thread.
    Don't try to make something "fast" until you are able to quantify "slow".

    Thank you for your help. I'm going to wait until Ubuntu 9.04 to come out and see if the problem still persists.

    just install Caffeine - works well to temporarily disable screensaver with one click.
