Glad I ran across this thread, the lack of sound was really annoying! I tried OSS v4, and the sound worked, but it wasn't the ideal option.

Dell Inspiron 1721 with Maverick: Sound works fine but external mic input is flaky.
The alsa-base.conf has no snd-hda-intel entry (using model=dell-m42 or model=dell-m44 does not work).
Plugging in external mic then restarting also (sudo alsa force-reload) and external mic starts working. You can unplug and the built-in mic takes over as expected but plugging external back in does not switch back to external mic (internal carries on working). Restarting alsa with ext mic plugged in seems only way to get it to work.

I wonder if you could help me with my card.

The machine is an ASUS AIO (ET2400IGTS). The card Codec: Realtek ALC887

Behvaiour is that the sound works, the speakers sound great, but when trying to use the headphone jack, the sound goes quiet on the speakers but nothing comes out of the jack.

I've tried options model=auto and model=generic, but neither solves the problem.

However, HDMI DOES NOT WORK !!
