    snd- intel-hda options Database

Please do not post problems or ask for help here

The list has been updated to include everything up to post 81 so you do not need to wade through them, I already did that for you. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

As many of you have found out, there are hundreds of laptops and motherboards out there and every one of them seems to need its own particular option added to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file to operate properly.

I have begun to put together this database of options for specific makes and models. It is not much but it is a start and with your help we can make it bigger and better. The idea is to get all the information in one place.

If you have found the option that works with your particular make and model, please post in this thread and I will add it to the database. When posting please include the make and model of your machine or motherboard, the alsa version, and the alsa-base option or options. Also please report if the mic/speaker or digital output switches work if you have tested them or anything else you think people should know. Some of these options also require alsa 1.0.18 or 19 or .20 or.21. I have tried to note this where information was made available to me but, as I said, this is user supplied info and much is taken from other posts and elsewhere so this sort of information was not always available.

If you find a thread that may be helpful please post a link.

To use the database, find the make and model of your machine and then open the alsa-base file as root so you can edit it
    sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
(If you are using Jaunty the file name has changed to alsa-base.conf to conform to the new configuration file naming convention)

at the end of the file add

    options snd-hda-intel xxx...=xxxx....
replacing the xxxx with the option you found. More than one option may be necessary and can be placed on the same line. You will see examples below. If there is more than one line listed after your machine, use them as listed.

    Restart alsa.
    killall pulseaudio
    sudo alsa force-reload
    pulseaudio -D
(You also may be able to just log out and log back in but you may need to reboot for the option to be implemented.)

The database is arranged by manufacturer and model. If there is no option listed for your machine you should try the options used for similar machines. Some dell and compaq models have been reported to work with hp options and some hps with toshiba options so you can see how confusing this is getting.

These are options as reported by users so there may be errors. If you have found an option that works better, please let us know. There are also some links at the end for more options and other help with sound.

    More Stuff to try
These links have many more options that may be helpful for you. These lists are by sound chip type rather than make and model. If your machine is not listed you can try other options available for that chip.

Temujin also has many options listed here

And there is a large list of options from Donny K. here

For more hda troubleshooting help you can go here

    Upgrading ALSA
If you have a newer model machine you may get better support from the newest version of Alsa.

You can also get the debs for ALSA 1.0.19 for Hardy and Intrepid and Jaunty from here

    General help

For a quick guide to getting sound setup in Hardy and Intrepid

    For Jaunty

For more extensive sound troubleshooting and setup

Thank you for all your help and best regards.

P.S. To all who gave thanks, you are entirely welcome.
