Re: HOWTO setting up ubuntu 8.10 intrepid on the HP tx2z tablet pc

    Hi Favux and Glurgle,

After much tweaking and messing around, I decided to install ubuntu studio 8.10 64bit edition once more.

    1. ubuntu studio DVD
    2. all updates/upgrades
    3. enable restricted drivers - fglrx + broadcom wireless
    3. fglrx upgrade download directly from ati/amd site
    4. wacom driver download from Rene Mayrhofer’s pre-compiled packages
    5. menu.lst tweak i8042.reset on actual kernel line
    6. then installed whole bunch of applications

Result? A fully working ubuntu on tx2z - wireless, resume, pen, touch, rotation (no compiz), touch-sensitive on GIMP and Inkscape, etc...

I also ordered an ExpressCard 1394 card that works wonderfully with kino for video footage capture.

Oh! There is a firefox plugin called "Grab and Drag" that enables Firefox to take pen/touch input - so that you can scroll web pages using your finger(s), just like how iPhone does it. Fun stuff!!

    THANK YOU ALL, wonder guys!!

I guess my initial swap partition was really too small for resume purpose. And I have never heard that it is related. I also hope that more applications can explore and take advantage of touch and stylus input. Also, multi-touch capability is also unheard on linux, just yet, I think.

    Cheers,

    Vincent

Re: HOWTO setting up ubuntu 8.10 intrepid on the HP tx2z tablet pc

    hey,
im new in this forum...just upgraded from an tx2000 to the tx2z. i am having problems getting my audio capture right. i need it for skype. i get a very static feedback using alsa, if i turn the front mic boost up too high its just static, too low and no recording... i dont get any feedback trough pulse audio, but playback works fine.

i tried all three lines and currently using the first one(it seems all work...)
    options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba
    #options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=toshiba position_fix=1
    #options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=acer

besides... is there any hope we can tune the fans? its a bit too loud for my taste... i am using the frequency applet with the fan all the time on (set in bios) i dont like the bios turning the fans all the time off/on with full blast every 5 minutes

    greets, phil

Re: HOWTO setting up ubuntu 8.10 intrepid on the HP tx2z tablet pc

    Hi tempo500,

My tx2z has a problem now. The sound suddenly stopped working, no sound coming from any application. I had not tweaked sound settings after my second installation and the sound suddenly died, two days after a perfectly working tx2z. Sorry I can´t help you on this one.

The fan is *almost* driving me crazy. I have not done anything on it either. Just yet.

So, good luck in finding the solutions you want, and please come back and post your solutions when they are resolved.

    Vincent

    Hi eccuser,

The gnome desktop of my tx2z would not automatically rotation when you rotate the screen into tablet mode. I created a couple of scripts, according to the HOWTO by Favux, talking about rotation, that you must have read already, and put them into buttons of gnome panel. They are rotate-right, rotate-upsidedown, no-touch, enable-touch, which are basically all accomplished by issuing xsetwacom command. Facux mentioned that he has not found the trigger from the hardware screen rotation. Therefore, no automatic rotation of X yet.

    Hope this helps.

Do you have sound working? Can you post your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, and /etc/modules. I have this annoying problem that no sound coming out to speakers nor headphones.

    Thanks.

Re: HOWTO setting up ubuntu 8.10 intrepid on the HP tx2z tablet pc

    OK,

Looks like I am talking to myself these days.

I re-installed ubuntustudio on tx2z again, and again.

The result is 50-50. The working sequence I have is like this

    1. Install DVD
    2. enable proprietary drivers - ATI + Broadcom
    3. Install network-manager (reboot)
    4. run update
    5. reboot
    6. Insall linuxwacom driver
    7. replace xorg.conf (all the stylus and touch goodies, see first post)
    8. tweak /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, /boot/grub/menu.lst
    9. Now reboot and make sure everything is working
    10. Install fglrx (remember to run aticonfig --set-pcs-str="DDX,EnableRandr12,TRUE" to enable xrandr)
    11. Reboot - success - sound, wireless, rotation all worked.

The sequence is working for about 15 minutes as when gdm starts the chime and the sound after login were both there.

Until I ran totem to watch my movie files, mp4 by HandBrake. Totem asked to install extra codec so I went ahead. Afterwards, the movie plays but the sound came out for around 10 seconds and now sound is dead.

I can't believe it was caused by Totem gstream codecs. What's going on here?

I am really frustrated. Does anyone remember what those two codecs Totem asks to play mp4 files? When can I remove them?

    Help!

    Vincent
P/S. tablet rotation and wireless are working fine, but no sound.

I don't know if this will work with a TX2z or just mess you up further. It's a thought anyway.

    Thanks.

I was looking at pulseaudio setup/configuration for the last hour or so. This is new stuff to me. So I will look it up and study further.

Thanks again. It feels great someone is taking of me .
