    ALSA 5.1 (X-Fi) problems

    Hello all,

So I've tried all solutions and my 5.1 speakers have only 2.1 audio... As you'll see below, I have no option of checking Surround, LFE, Center, etc. I'm at a loss
    - I follwed the X-Fi how-to and installed the drivers
    - Read and tried the ALSA wiki
    - Uninstalled PulseAudio
    - Changed Audio Output Module to "ALSA Audio Output" in VLC Player
and have followed many other guides and haven't had surround since I installed 8.10. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Re: ALSA 5.1 (X-Fi) problems

Now, I just did some more things:
    - Removed ALSA packages
    - Reinstalled ALSA packages
    - Made sure all ALSA/Pulse packages were installed

    * Default Sound Card (Starting... then closes)

    Alt+F2
    speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6 -l1 -twav (nothing happens)

    Terminal
    alsamixer
    aplay -l
    aplay -L
    (same results as post above)

    asoundconf-gtk:
    Code:
You need to make sure asoundconf is active!
By default, asoundconf's configuration file is ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf
and must be included in ~/.asoundrc. Open this file to make sure it is!

Very interested to see if you find a solution to this as I have the same issue. All the sounds play fine but only through 2 channels.

At least I'm not the only one. Hopefully this may help you and others. All the scattered posts and websites are quite abundant on this topic. Hopefully this may narrow it down and help...

Here's some sites that'll prob help you (but not me, haha)

    Re: ALSA 5.1 (X-Fi) problems

Unfortunately I have been through most of those processes. The one I had the most hope for didn't work either because Xubuntu apparently doesn't use PulseAudio and I can't figure out how to install it and make it the default audio processing scheme.

I tried going through and reinstalling the creative drives because last time I didn't install any dependencies, only followed creative's instructions. It didn't make any difference.

I think it may be our .asoundrc file that may be the culprit of our problems. I'll keep you informed if things start making positive changes (please do the same for us if you've found a solution)

EDIT - Just disabled onboard audio. If I put my ear up to the center and rear speakers (the ones that aren't working) I can hear noise/static,

I came to pretty much the same conclusion. I couldn't find anything to help someone as new to me to Linux to hand write out settings though. And the GUI app I found to configure it wouldn't install because of some KDE issue. (had to compile from source)

    Re: ALSA 5.1 (X-Fi) problems

To the best of my knowledge, there is no 5.1 support from the X-Fi driver currently released. With out hacking around in the driver code, I don't know how to achieve this with out writing new code into the driver.

As I'm not programmer, you're probably going to have to wait til' Alsa's next release and pray for the driver to be included and improved upon.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
