Ubuntu Studio Will not connect! auto eth0 doesnt exist :(

I installed Ubuntu Studio 8.10 Last night. During the installation(which i cant believe is frikin old school blue screen)
i chose not to set up the network or anything.

now that im all ready. i put my ethernet cable into my 56K modem on my notebook. however. the ethernet port light did not come on. no connection was found. and FURTHER MORE i do not have any auto connections or the "auto eth0" option i had before in normal ubuntu 8.10. the only option available is "lo" and it says its idle even after i stick in the cables.

    what should i do?
should i set-up auto eth0 myself through terminal. thats my only guess and google is giving me crap. someone please help.

    Hi jason.
go to a networked computer, follow this directions, download the files and install and reboot, and you're ready to go.
pay attention if you got the right file for your architecture i386 or amd64 bits, when you download the files.
    take care
