install drivers for nvidia 8800 gt or quadro 1500 fx

I've searched forums and nvidia for instructions to install drivers and although believe I've followed instructions to the letter... simply can not get them installed and working. I've tried on two different computers with different video cards, even tried 180.18 beta driver from nvidia - no luck.

It appears from my research that I am not alone, but just wondering if anyone out there has actually got this to work with Ubuntu 8.10? Also tried using Fedora - same results.

Any info would be appreciated.

in the menu System->Adminsitration->Hardware Drivers, install the recommended drivers from there. That should work fine...

I tried that and it says no proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Any other suggestions? Thanks
