Try xmms - best lightweight player for Linux. It is not longer in the repos (I am not referring to xmms2) but their are debs available for easy install. This thread will help: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1019121&page=2
Thanks Buddy
Just a note:
Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is a Free/Open Source sound editing application. Think "GarageBand."
Audacious(http://audacious-media-player.org/) is a Free/Open Source audio player application. Think "Winamp."
I haven't tried many of these, but it seems there are several alternatives whether you want an Audacity replacement or an Audacious replacement:

the best editor ive ever used is sound forge, its on windows tho, bt if you can run it under wine or in a virtual windows terminal i highly recommend it, especially if your chopping samples
how about
it is lightweight, and not audacityCode:rezound
the first time you start it you need to start it from the terminal, for the licence aggreement
Try ardour, it is a real professional quality recording suite.

ardour is not and audio editor, it is a DAW, and hard to use. I use it, but not for editing
