If I wanted to setup a linux server on an old computer I had laying around and put together a forum site what software could I use to do that? Also, how high tech of a system would it require to do it?

This isn't really the forum for this question.
Most forum software require a database generally MySQL in the Linux world. And many use PHP.
You'll need those installed along with Apache2.
