I am trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 on an AMD64 desktop that has an Nvidia GeForce 6 series. Unfortunately, the only resolution option I have is 800x600. I have tried activating the recommended hardware driver (Nvidia 177) but that made the the screen into one thin line at the top of the monitor, so I deactviated the driver.

I have searched around a bit and found that there might be display issues with 8.10. Any recommendations on how I can improve the screen resolution (I have been using 1024x780 in Windows XP)? Should I go with 8.04?
