Sorry, yeah, I remember now. You are indeed correct, but you still need the relevant module loaded into the kernel before you can do that, and thats what the modprobe command does.

    Code:
    sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0031
Sorry if i confused you, I have been out of the dongle loop for a while and didnt explain myself too well. Modprobe used first to recognise the dongle and modeswitch to flick it into modem mode.

that worked perfectly. last question, just curious but should that addition to the modules file be added to the this guide or is it just my unit that's playing hokey.

The modprobe is only required with 8.10 (or earlier). 9.04 onwards has recognition of the ZTE device ids built-in, so usbserial is loaded automatically.

Somewhere earlier in this thread I posted some files for 8.10, which includes a udev rules file that runs modprobe when the device is plugged in. That seemed the cleanest way to do it.

Re: Howto: Connect ZTE MF627 3G modem with NM0.7

I recently flashed my stick to the generic firmware, and written a small script to send AT+COPS=0,0 (to force it to find 3, rather than keep wandering off to Orange GPRS). Those two things seem to have dramatically improved the performance, and it seems to hold connections more persistently. It's not perfect, but it's much better.

However, I'm also seeing the problem of the stick going completely dead (apparently losing power) after an hour or so of continuous use. dmesg reveals nothing helpful other than the usb subsystem saying it's disconnected, so I'm assuming it's just the stick blowing out? Pulling it out and putting it back in again resolves it.

It's annoying that I can't find where the modem init commands are sent by NM, so that I can manually add the AT+COPS=0,0 commands...

Re: Howto: Connect ZTE MF627 3G modem with NM0.7

I've been working on my config package for the ZTE MF627 again to get it working properly in Karmic, a friend kindly lent me the device for a week so I could work with it. You'll need to install it from my PPA (instructions at: http://www.greenhughes.com/ppa).

This package should also work on Intrepid/8.10 as well, I've put in an extra bit in the script to load up usbserial as required.

    Hope this helps!

Re: Howto: Connect ZTE MF627 3G modem with NM0.7

I am using karmic, I am on the three mobile network in UK, I have a SKYPE S2 mobile phone and a ZTE MF627 HSDPA USB dongle

I followed the above the instructions above and got my ZTE modem working straight away, I am currently swapping my sim card between my phone and modem but I would like to use my phone as a USB modem but I am unable to figure out how to get it to work via USB

how can I get the SKYPE S2 mobile phone working as a USB modem?
