Jaunty will work but no 3D/2D Acceleration.

I would recommend to install intrepid and use the ubuntu-mobile ppa as described above, this will bring you 2D/3D and everything else works best!

Question Re: Installing on the Dell Mini 12

I have Hardy UNR and was thinking of upgrading to Intrepid via update manager. During the process, I get error saying that...

A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

Does this mean I can't upgrade from Hardy UNR to Intrepid UNR? Anybody tried or succeeded?

i had the same issue so im doing the i386 iso, i tried the normal desktop iso but as predicted x wouldnt start, i edited xorg.conf added in the lines and was able to start x with startx. i double clicked the installer and went through the motions but at one point the installer juts exited about half way through copying the files for the new isntallation. im downloading the alternate installer now to try a text base install.

Strange, I am using the mini 10, not the 12, in case that may mean something else... but which tool did you use to create the USB? Unetbootin or usb-creator? I had tried Unetbootin and it messed up before and then used usb-creator and it worked... I was able to boot to the live desktop, which ran at 800x600 automatically, and was able to run that installer and then add the repos and it automatically configured my screen's size to 1024x576.

This morning I posted a link to this thread in the Dell forums and tonight I see that the post was deleted. Dell is not posting drivers, .ISO files or answering any posts with regards to this issue. In addition, posts that direct people to this information are deleted. Hrm

Re: Installing on the Dell Mini 12

I'm trying to follow the installation for the 8.10-lpia posted by kylecronan several posts ago. I've sorted many problems but there is one I can not sort. When trying to install the lpis kernel in the rescue mode (see post #501) the system just keep on asking for the Ubuntu installation cdrom after the "apt-get install linux-lpia". It seems not able to find the files, but odd enough it just read the Releases files.

    Any help will be appreciated

Did you remember to do the following?

Also, I had to add cdrom-detect/try-usb=true to the boot options for the rescue mode.
From your problem it sounds like you may have skipped that.

Re: Installing on the Dell Mini 12

    Progress!

Thanks to mattiasak's post #512 (the 'new' #94 IMO ) in this thread I now have Intrepid installed and running very nicely ('cept for a few GFX probs which I cover later) on my mini 10! Thank you Matt! I followed his instructions in #512 and I used marduk's xorg.conf in post number #519 only I changed the line:

    Modes "1280x800" "1024x640"

    to

    Modes "800x576"

That let me 'startx' and run the intrepid desktop (X GUI) installer np!

One big plus about having upgraded to intrepid is its fixed my touchpad- under belmont I found impossible to use scrollbars using the touchpad but I can do that fine under Intrepid so I no longer need to always have my USB mouse plugged in to use X now.

After I installed the pouslbo 2D and 3D drivers and rebooted, X changed to the correct video mode (1024x576) despite me still using marduks xorg.conf which currently only specifies 800x576 and doesn't even mention psb. DRI wasn't enabled/accessable until I created a 'video' group and added my user to that group, now glxinfo tells me I do have DRI enabled but I still can't activate compiz as it just says 'Desktop Effects could not be enabled'. lsmod tells me I've got the psb and drm modules loaded?

Seeing as I can't get compiz working I can be pretty certain that I've not got my GFX card configured properly hence I shouldn't be surprised that I can't even get a picture of any res out of the HDMI port yet. The good news to emerge out of all my GFX probs is that xrandr does see my HDTV and it lists an additional, higher res - 1280x720 - as being available that wasn't available in belmont, but I've so far failed to get any of the 3 available HDMI res' to work under Intrepid (the others being 640x480 and 800x600) but I'll have to try again after someones explained how to get compiz working- I'll prob. need a properly configured xorg.conf.

Kyle - Your gma wiki page could well do with being updated to reflect the new support by intrepid. I would really like to see your page include full instructions on how to get X/compiz fully functional and include complete xorg.conf files for both the Mini 12 and the Mini 10.

After we've done that we should then update:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA

Which is now totally outdated and wrong wrt Linux support and it should link to Kyles page, once we've updated and fleshed it out a bit with xorg.conf's and recommended/latest package repository addresses and version numbers for reference. This thread is beyond a joke now but we could kill it when we complete the gma500 Linux wiki with the necessary info and guides.

I'm much happier now that I'm running normal, i386 Ubuntu instead of a LPIA version. Why? Because the main reason I use Ubuntu and Debian are the repositories which allow me to avoid having to mess around compiling some big nasty programs. All non-official, 3rd party repos support i386 but hardly any provide LPIA packages too and personally I haven't noticed LPIA builds to be any faster than i386. Running 'normal' ubuntu is just a lot easier.

    Thanks for your help guys!
