Installing on the Dell Mini 12

Hi,

I wanna say thanks to everybody who helped in getting this thing to work, especially to brteag00 for posting this great instruction guide and to jabronioh for uploading the files.

I've exactly followed post #94 to get it to run on our Panasonic CF-U1 Toughbook - and it works great (glxgears running at approximately 105 fps in full screen mode for 1024x600).

There are just two things that I have to note here concerning the Toughbook:

1. I figured out that I have to turn off the splash screen in menu.lst and to update grub, otherwise X starts up, but X and all terminals are simply a blank screen. Turning the splash screen off gets everything to work.

2. Currently the touchscreen is not working. This surely is due to missing drivers in the kernel. Currently we simply have to live with that.

@brteag and others who have enabled 3D on the UNR image,
You guys haven't seen this bug where X hangs and then exits with a fatal error? If it happens even on the Dell version of Hardy but is stable with the same drivers on UNR 1.0.1 that would be something interesting.

Is this a fact that it also locks up with the Ubuntu Image?

It has happened to irwnfv and myself. I've hit it twice now. Not really surprising given all those 0.x version numbers in the Intel stuff. This code is just not ready.

well then i will not reinstall, intrepid now runs okay without 3D, so i am happy.

I only have one real strange thing:

When i wake up the Mini from Hibernate and don't touch anything, it won't do anything (Network Connection e.g.). I have to move the mouse so it connects to my wireless again...

I have reinstalled the Dell belmont image and it is better now than when I got it from the factory. HOWEVER, it will reboot itself and it has happened once when using Synaptic.

I just hope we get a better image in the future for this laptop, cuz I really like it!

Mine is rock-solid. I had it running an rss-glx screensaver in windowed mode, playing a video and refreshing washingtonpost.com every few minutes for an entire afternoon, with no apparent problems.

It stinks that the Dell image is giving you trouble - but, as someone pointed out, there's still a lot of beta code here. Hopefully this stuff will get sorted out soon.

I am tempted to install Brteag00's UNR install from post #94 on another partition but may wait a day or two! In hindsight, I should have traveled this route rather than reinstalling from the Dell image.
