I have what seems to be a somewhat unusual problem. I've been running Ubuntu on my main desktop for about a year now. Upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 with no problems and have been running 8.10 since just a few weeks after it was released, with no problems. However, this morning I installed a bunch of updates that came down the pipe (didn't even really look at them, as I've gotten used to all updates installing without any problems), and after the reboot my wired ethernet connection (an onboard Realtek PCIE x1 LAN 8101E on an ASROCK Conroe 1333 D667 motherboard) stopped showing up in the Network Manager, and the Network Manager applet showed up in the Notification Area, saying that my network connection was unmanaged. Basically, as far as Network Manager is concerned, I'm not connected to any network and I have no network devices. Despite this, my wired ethernet connection still works perfectly fine. It shows up on eth0 when I run ifconfig, I get an IP address with DHCP, and I can connect to the internet (in fact I'm posting this post from the computer that's having the problems). It just doesn't show up in the Network Manager. I uninstalled and reinstalled the network-manager and network-manager-gnome packages, but it didn't make any difference. I searched around a bit for solutions, but most people seem to be having problems with their wireless connections showing up, not with their wired connections. Here is my ifconfig output:

As of now my "solution" has simply been to uninstall network-manager and network-manager-gnome and live without them. Since it's a desktop computer, I don't move it around at all and I don't use wireless, so as long as the wired connection is working, not a big deal. Still, it bothers me slightly that this just suddenly stopped working, and if I can fix it I would like to. Any advice or help would be appreciated, and please accept my apologies in advance if this is something that has already been covered (although if it has, I'd appreciate a link, as I haven't been able to find anything!).auto lo

iface eth0 inet dhcp
