There already exists a thread on this somewhere.

I do think it would be nice to have a first-boot video (or first boot anything) since it gives Ubuntu a nice bit of polish, but that there is too Macish for me. Having said that, showing off our internationalization might is quite temptating, so maybe it's doomed to be that way :/

Should be using royalty free audio - for extra points, whatever gets in the Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase for that release. Also, a complex video would be unmanageable since this must fit snugly on all sorts of screen resolutions and be played back smoothly on all sorts of computers. It could be better to develop a super simple concept then have it happen procedurally, on the spot, via a program.

A welcome screen like in for example OpenSUSE would be enough.

I often wonder if the future of Linux, vis a vis marketing, might not be in Mark Shuttleworth's hands. I agree with the sentiment stated elsewhere that any kind of advertising for Linux needs to be professionally done, and not the work of some amateurish hack.

However, this comes back to the "lack of solidarity" phenomenon I've pointed out before, because there's plenty of people who are part of the F/OSS community (as developers and/or as users) who couldn't care less if Linux never catches on. Sooner or later, this argument kind of needs to be settled. My opinion is that it should be settled in a "taking back our streets" kind of way (whether that specific theme shows through in the ads is a separate matter).

As for having a first-boot video, I've no personal objections to it, but I think Canonical doing actual TV advertising would be far more useful than any startup video.
Have you ever found something in the second-to-last place you looked?
