    How can I install Ubuntu on an old PC with Windows ME?

    How can I install Ubuntu on an old PC with Windows ME?

    I’m an absolute beginner with Ubuntu, but would like to try Ubuntu out on an old PC with a Pentium 3 and 128 MB main memory. There is 10 GB of free disk space AND internet access through my home network BUT:

    the CDROM drive works but the PC cannot boot from it so the Ubuntu 8.1 CDROM does not work;
    USB flash drives work but the PC cannot boot from them either;
    the floppy disk drive does not work at all and cannot be used;
    the Operating system is Windows ME (which means that WUBI does NOT work )

    What’s the easiest and quickest way to get Ubuntu working on this machine? Thanks in advance for any simple suggestions (I’m not good at Linux/Ubuntu jargon, so if it could be avoided, that would be great)

    Do you have another computer that you could swap out the HD into.

    I have heard it is possible to install on a different computer, then put it into the older computer before the first boot. That should configure xorg properly. If not, the following will do it:
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
    PS: If you can't boot from a CD, I would consider setting a separate partition to store future updated ISOs when Intrepid is no longer supported. In fact, consider using Hardy for the extra year of support.

    Have a look at this guide - it should do what you need:

    Ubuntu wont run very well at all with 128meg ram. Xubuntu would be better.

    if you have internet access go to http://www.virtualbox.org and download the VirtualBox for Windows, then install Ubuntu into a VirtualBox using the *.ISO as a cd drive. Ubuntu will run in a VirtualBox under Windows (you can even make it "full screen").

    Probably not so well with 128MB RAM.

    Although it is quite difficult installing Ubuntu on < 128MB is possible, but I had to do it using the Alternative CD (I used hardy I think and uninstalled a whole buch of stuff from the command line).

    It would be much easier to use Xubuntu!

    Actually, 128MB will be a little low even for Xubuntu.

    I'd suggest a minimal installation (see the LXDE link below for an example).

    The main problem is no CD / USB / floppy booting options.

    you might be able to install Damn Small Linux if you don't wanna go with VirtualBox

    Re: How can I install Ubuntu on an old PC with Windows ME?

    Wow, thanks to everybody for all your suggestions. I will be studying them in the coming week. Here are a few quick comments:

    1. I am a little surprised that Ubuntu doesn’t run well on 128 MB when Windows ME is adequate. I don’t know anything about Xubuntu but wonder if I should try it.

    2. I forgot to say that I hope Win/ME can dual boot with whatever version of Linux I finally try. If anybody has any further comments about that, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks again for your help.

    PS The first time I put this comment on, the system rejected it with an error message. This is the second try.
