    Nvidia, Modelines, Overscan...8.10

Hey guys, I've looked around here quite a bit for a solution. I, like many others, have an overscan problem when using an nvidia (GForce 6200) chipset going to my Sony Trinitron 36" HDTV. I'm running DVI straight out of the card into the TV. I lose about 5% of the screen on all sides. I'm running Ibex and don't think it's a problem specific to Ubuntu since every other distro has given the same problem (it might not even be a computer problem, maybe it's my TV not handling the DVI signal well).

I'm running nvidia proprietary driver 177 and am on my TV's native resolution (which is a good start). It looks like the only solution involves making a custom modeline that will shrink the screen down to match up with what I can see. But I can't figure out how to make a modeline (google's not helping) and none of the generators make any sense to me.

Can anybody help me out on making a modeline for this problem, or tell me if there's a better way? Will it even recognize my modeline changes while using the proprietary drivers? Some say it does, and some say it ignores them.

Bump. In the meantime, I'm using empty panels to block off the screen space that I'm not using. Works pretty well.

I am experiencing this problem as well, although I'm outputting through s-video to a CRT SD TV. From what I've gathered, it seems that Nvidia has stopped supporting over/underscan through their drivers, but I'm not sure on this.

It also appears that modelines offer an alternative, manual overscan that bypasses the drivers, but there's nowhere that I can find a straightforward guide to using them.

Thanks for the empty panel idea, though, this is a pretty good work-around for the time being.

Did you ever find an answer to the modelines?

Last night I finally got my HDTV perfect using an nVidia card, but the approach should be the same for all cards. I will be working on the steps and post everything hopefully by tomorrow. I know this seems like a worthless post, but hang in there.

Hey, smart comment for a smart guy! It's the fault of nvidia's proprietary drivers, not Ubuntu. Stop trolling.
