10 Meg OS - Tiny Core Linux is great

Tiny Core Linux is a very small (10 MB) minimal Linux Desktop. It is based on Linux 2.6 kernel, Busybox, Tiny X, Fltk, and Jwm. The core runs entirely in ram and boots very quickly.

It is not a complete desktop nor is all hardware completely supported. It represents only the core needed to boot into a very minimal X desktop typically with wired internet access.

The user has complete control over which applications and/or additional hardware to have supported, be it for a desktop, a nettop, an appliance, or server, selectable from our online repository.

Been playing with it this morning and it's super fast. You install the apps you want like Opera. I'm currently using it.

thanks. i have been looking for something like that. i have the linux from scratch book and live cd i got from a online store that prints free books and burn cd and i have not had anytime yet to start on it. i usealy do minimal custom debian installs but i would like to try a little alternative and especially one that can fit on a floppy disk. i have a old laptop that has no hardrive and it has very little ressurce but the boot floppy from freedos can run on it. its little of use but i could like to see if one can have a absolutely small linux system running on it before i get rid of the laptop. it is really very very old and i cant find any parts for it at all. and the effort for trying would be more expensive than just accept it has lived its laptop live and get over with it. i found it in the trash section at the recycling center.

What is it based on? Slackware? Debian? I mean,...would it be easy to add apps (via little dialup) after downloading the core?
If it would be fairly easy,...that could be a simple way of building a small, usable system. DSL just installs on the hard drive as Debian Woody.

You can, actually

gunzip tinycore.gz
cpio -i <tinycore

That extracts the "/" tree. The grub code is

title Tinycore
root (hd0,0)
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/sda1
boot

Of course, you'll need to put the "/" files in a partition and edit the grub code depending on your setup.

This is a really cool Distro. It reminds me of SliTaz, but even more basic. I'm posting with it right now

Now this is the kind of distro you can put on an old windows 3.1 machine .

One question though is it based on anything or is it its own distro?(I hardly see that anymore)
