thanks psyke for being such a diligent contributer, even though it didn't work for my system.
Hi,
My graphics card is Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10). I did Part A & B (Safe/Optimal). There has been some improvement in performance. I had a follow up question. Another suggestion I came across was to download xorg-edit - I got the latest version, v07.08.11. When I open the file xorg.conf in /etc/x11, under the Device tab most of the fields are blank:
Device: Configured Video Device
Driver:
BusID:
Video Ram:
Screen Number:
Option:
AccelMethod = uxa
EXAOptimizeMigration = true
Migration Heuristic = greedy
Tiling = false
I recognize the options - I remember inserting them in Part A step 1. However, when I try to change the tab away from Device I get the error box: Device drive must not be empty!
Is this the way it should be or is my configuration missing something?

using the basic setup/ safe i was able to get decent rendering
i have extra affects enabled.Code:112 frames in 5.4 seconds = 20.604 FPS 347 frames in 5.0 seconds = 69.162 FPS 407 frames in 5.0 seconds = 81.123 FPS 426 frames in 5.0 seconds = 85.119 FPS 400 frames in 5.0 seconds = 79.961 FPS 402 frames in 5.0 seconds = 80.223 FPS 416 frames in 5.0 seconds = 83.031 FPS 404 frames in 5.0 seconds = 80.662 FPS
it's a dell inspiron 1200 using the onboard memory which is less than 256mb minus what's allocated for vram.Code:ss@ubuntu:~$ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 03) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.3 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #4 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev d3) 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1e.3 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 03) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) IDE Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 03) 02:01.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1510 PC card Cardbus Controller 02:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82562ET/EZ/GT/GZ - PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller Mobile (rev 03)

i will certainly read threw it several times, as i said' i haven't went bleeding edge, i just decided to fiddle with it this evening
i like what everyone is trying to do here, great job
i have tried the commands for optimal twice now, but my kernal is still 2.6.28.blah blah blah. Any1 help me out here?
I've tried 8.10 EasyPeasy on my Eee 900 (Celeron), and netbook-laucnher was flying. Then installed 9.04 UNR and it was slow as heck. Tried Optimal from this Guide, didn't really improve much -- anmations are still sluggish. UXA did speed a bit, but nowhere near the level of 8.10.
The only thing I didn't try from the above is bleeding-edge, but given my experiences of using cutting-edge nvidia drivers, nouveau, in the past, this is not good at all.
I'm very tempted to go back to EasyPeasy and 8.10. This looks like a major flop of Jaunty, BTW.
Ran the update, it brought up kernel to 2.8.28-15, still the same.
I also tried patched apw kernel from April 21, from the relevant bug, and results are the same as 2.6.28-15 and 2.6.30.
So is there anything else I could try for netbook-launcher acceleration -- some GL tweaks, anything?
psyke--
I initially had trouble with the "Safe" procedure. It made my 965 system slow to the point of being unusable. I've narrowed down the problem to the modifications to the xorg config file: it was either the accelmethod line or the exaoptimizemigration line that was causing the problem. I then got tired of rebooting and got too lazy to narrow it down further. Even without including these first two lines, though, my problems are solved: I can watch fulllscreen flash videos with no stuttering.
Thanks a lot for the help. You might want to subdivide the original post further to clarify that just installing the driver might be sufficient for some users, and if it's not, they can go on to mess with the xorg file, the kernel, etc.
A further question...i use a restricted driver for my internet connection, so I don't want to use the new kernel. would the 2.6.29 kernel work with restricted drivers? is there a way to get them working with 2.6.30?
triplesick -- thanks to your report, I've commented out UXA and got speed back in netbook-launcher! Yay! Now it's on par with 8.10.
