Java version 7 update 11 is now available

You can install this but, this article points out that even update 11 does not fix the security flaw and it is suggested that you disable java altogether.

Java version 7 update 11 just now became available.
The link to Check Java version is in my signature.
Download the Linux version for 32 bit machines or the Linux x64 version for 64 bit machines.
The .RPM version is for other Linux Distros.
Choose "save file" when prompted and then the instructions to install it are in the other link in my signature Manually update Java.
The How to link is Oracle (Sun) Java JRE for Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Debian.
The instructions have been updated to 7.11 so you just have to copy and paste.
For 32 bit the instructions are on the left and for 64 bit the instructions are on the right.
It will tell you to remove any older version first and provides instructions for doing so.
This method also removes the IcedTea Java-plug-in

This is intended for those who prefer the CLI method of updating Java.

When you get it installed and restart Firefox open a tab and enter:

Code:

about:plugins

It should show this:
Java(TM) Plug-in 1.7.0_11

This supposedly fixes the most recent problem.

But Oracle seems to be doing nothing more than playing Whack-A-Mole with security flaws these days.

The security threat posed by Java is patched with Java version 7 update 11.

Also, there is a popup when Java is requested I think this started with update 10.
But, update 11 definitely asks for permission.

You might want to read the article I added to the 1st post. It's up to you if you want to install it or disable it.
You will get the popup displayed in the previous post whenever java is trying to be accessed.
So, you could judge by how much you trust that site as to whether to proceed with java access or not.
That is what I am going to do.

I now get a popup when clicking on "check java version" asking to activate the addon. It gives you a few different options but, if you click "activate"
the box in the previous post pops up. So, I guess there are now 2 prompts before you can allow java on your computer.

That beats deactivating it altogether in my mind. Just be sure of what site you are authorizing to run java.
