Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64

I found that the first time I ran our SSL java applet it worked. After that it didn't. I tried removing .java etc but didn't fix it.

A couple of other issues I have - the theme in Firefox looks terrible. Also is there any way to make the translations work?

    Thanks

I'm hoping somebody can help me debug this...

I'm running a up-to-date Gutsy install (AMD64). I had this system working in a previous Gutsy install on the same machine. For some reason I cannot get it working this time.

I've tried removing all of the java packages I can find. Java config files, etc, and then running the install script for both Swiftweasel and Firefox. On Swiftweasel, when I hit the page with the applet, the browser just hangs. When I run it in Firefox, I get an X icon instead of the applet and it fails to run.

    Here's the log from Firefox:

I think it has something to do with JSSE missing - see link below. I installed the default one in Kubuntu 7.10 but that is probably 64-bit. A 32-bit version might fix the problem.

Well, I upgraded to 8.04 (fresh install) after seeing that Kilz updated the script, however, java does not work in Swiftweasel 32 bit. The file /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so says "link broken". Swiftweasel does not "see" the Java plugin, and javaws fails as well. Since I partly need this for work, I'm bumped. It certainly worked fine in 7.10. Swiftweasel also looks horrible, which it didn't before, but that's less pressuring -- I somehow need to get Java to work. I'll try the manual steps and see if that gets me somewhere.

Maybe these cyclical releases are not for me.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64

The manual steps had the result that the plugin is recognized, but the browser freezes. The steps to fix that did not work. Java Web Start also does not work.

Perhaps I, or you, can think of something. I may have to install the 32-bit version of 8.04 tomorrow. It's definitely not want I want to do, but I need javaws and the "real" browser plugins (the work applets I need to use do not run with IceTead at all).

I sort of want to say that I wish I had stayed with 7.10, but that's silly too - eventually I would have had to update, and well, unless Sun releases proper 64-bit versions of their plugin and javaws, the problem will persist.

As good as that script runs, do you think you might be able to see if the ubuntu project would be willing to pick it up as something carried on their repos? Maybe if a gui was written for it or something. It would be like EnvyNS is for ati and nvidia drivers.

Long ago (2006 during Edgy development) I had a (very very long) discussion on the developers mailing list asking for a 32bit firefox for 64bit users. The response was less than enthusiastic. They wanted me to tell them how to do it. Since I am not a developer (Isnt it amazing what someone can do without knowing anything) I really couldn't do that. It then went basically along the line of how Ubuntu was open source and I was free to do what I felt was needed.

Anyway, the useful life of this is short. As soon as Sun Java releases a 64bit plugin with Sun Java 7 I will stop support for the script and howto for new releases. I will leave it up as long as the older Ubuntu releases are still active. So I dont think it will attract someone who could give it a gui, and it is outside of my abilities.
I trust Microsoft as far as I could comfortably spit a dead rat

Yeah, I hope sun does that soon, it would make things much easier.

Hey here is an icon yall can use so if you have both firefox64 and 32 you can differentiate between the two.

(the prob is it is burried under 100+ pages of posts lol)

Thanks for the icon, I like it. But the distance between the 3 and 2 looks kind of big. Could you see what it would look like if they were a little closer together?

Thank you very much. I just installed this on my fresh Gutsy install and I can now use all the java applets I couldn't use with firefox64 (government of canada epass, and gotomypc.com universal viewer).

OH... AND install the google toolbar.
