COMPLETE Newbie!! Never worked in Terminal b4. Wireless worked initially, now NOT

Hi Everyone. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my post. I have searched as much as I possibly could to make sure I do this posting correctly.

I JUST installed Lubuntu 12.04 on an old Dell Inspiron 700M. I truly am a COMPLETE NEWBIE and have NEVER ran dos prompts, terminal commands, NOTHING like that ever before.

I tried to look at the forum and copied and will paste as much info as I can find that might help to solve my issue. Like I said I am a COMPLETE NEWBIE (but want to learn) and have never done anything like this before. I am SURPRISED I ever got it running at all!!! lol I have my system setup to dual boot for either Windows XP or Lubuntu 12.04. I HAD a wireless connection for the first day, then JUST when I was getting really excited about how much FASTER Lubuntu was than running all the bloat of Windows XP (evidently), SUDDENLY ALL the wireless connections disappeared. Not only did I not get a wireless connection, there was system would no longer SEARCH for a wireless connection.

I LOVED Lubuntu 12.04 when it was working and would LOVE to get it working again because it COMPLETELY revitalized this machine!! I am COMPLETELY LOST Now though. I have done as many searches as I can and have NO IDEA where to go from here. I dont really know the chipset or whatever wireless info is needed but I tried to follow the guidelines of the forum and post as much data as I Could from the commands I found on this site for wireless postings.

Again I have NO IDEA what I DID...I just typed in the terminal some of the EXACT codes you suggested here on this forum.

Btw the wireless connection DOES work in Windows, but not on Lubuntu. I really want my Lubuntu back and would LOVE to become much more proficient at Ubuntu in general. Baby steps I know, but I am ALREADY lost!!

Below I will copy and paste the info I saved from the terminal in Lubuntu 12.04 in the instructions of this forum. I HOPE I am posting the correct data.

Like I said it WORKED initially and just as I began to get really excited it suddenly stopped working. Btw the wired connection does work, but I never used wired and and it is not in a convenient area of the house.

 wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script

It will download a script and create a file named wireless-info.tar.gz in your home folder with wireless information so we can see the condition of your wireless at this time and the Mac address, WPA key and WEP key are removed for your security, then reply back, click on the paper clip and attach the wireless-info.tar.gz file as a zip file.

If you do not have ethernet either then follow the directions at this link for running the script without internet.

Thank you for the prompt replay Wild Man . I do not have ethernet at this time but I will try to run it per your instructions in the link. If I cannot do that properly I will just wait until I can connected via ethernet in the morning. Although I ADMIT I am IMPATIENT and want to try it NOW!!! lol Wish me luck on doing it right!!

I am NOT sure if this is the right info (probably not) because I tried to do it via the link and executable without an ethernet connection. Anyway...below is the only info I could find. It is the script itself. The result file (wireless-info.txt, or wireless-info.txt.tar.gz) would have been saved in the same folder from which you ran this script. Copy-paste the contents from that file (if it is a .txt one), or simply attach it to your next post here.

PS:
The fact that it asked for your password means you did it right. Congratulations for running your first Linux script !

Yes it did. Since Wild Man seems to have gone offline, I guess I may try a few shots.

Is your wireless access-point named "ASIANROCKSTAR"? Because that is the one that seems to have the strongest signal.

If it is, then could you try changing the channel in the router/access-point from 7 to 1 or 11? These (channel 1 and 11) often work better with linux drivers.

Another thing you can do right in your system is to run the following command in terminal (shortcut key to open terminal is Ctrl+Alt+T) :

sudo iwconfig rename3 power off

Just copy-paste (with mouse) the above code in your terminal to avoid typing mistakes. This will turn the power management off on the wireless interface.
[Note : sudo will ask for your password. You won't see anything on the screen while typing the password. Just type it correctly and press "Enter"]

It's a weird name by the way for an interface (rename3). Did you try any other fixes lately?

There are a few things we need to check on.

Mode:Managed Channel=0

It says your router is on channel 0 it will not work on 0.
Please try 1 or 11.

It says

Nickname:"ipw2100"

but that name does not show up in the iwlist scan.

Let's turn power managemnt off:

Did you clone the drive ubuntu is on by any chance? Did you remove network manager and set static ip?
