I think it depends more on what applications you are using and what websites you are visiting.
If for example you use a proprietary software on Linux, like Skype, and browsing a website like Facebook, then I guess you can't be really sure if you are being spied on or not.

Yah I'm pretty sure one of the documents Snowden leaked was a memo from an NSA analyst that said "Aw snap! This guy's got Linux, man. Our giant spy agency funded by gazillions of dollars has been foiled again by those meddling linux kids "
