Help a noob: Sound suddenly broken 10.04 with USB audio

I've got an HP Proliant microserver onto which I've installed Lucid. There's no on-board sound so I bought a USB audio adapter that uses the same chipset as the ThinkPenguin one recommended as out-of-the-box compatible: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-lin...-card-gnulinux

All was good for several weeks. Until I tried to change the stereo balance in the Sound Preferences dialog. That killed the sound. Dead. Apps don't seem to be reporting any kind of problem but no sound comes out of the headphone jack in the audio adapter.

This machine doesn't have much installed, so the only app whose log file I know how to access is Subsonic, and this is what it says when I try to play a track (does it help?):
    Code:

I'm a complete noob when it comes to diagnosing hardware issues on Linux, so if any kind soul would be willing to guide me through that process, telling me which shell commands to run for the diagnosis and remedy, I'd be very grateful. I've tried searching already but I haven't found anybody with the same problem and the same hardware.

    Hi!
Has this problem happened before? If not, it's maybe because you're using Lynx? Not sure if that's it, but i'm sort of a noob when it comes to audio problems. :/. I'm really sorry.

No, as I say, the sound has been working fine with the USB audio adapter.

It would be surprising if I had to re-install Ubuntu simply to fix this problem, especially if the problem could arise again without warning.
