About to use KDE for the first time

I just got my sister's useless XP computer, and I've decided I want to put kubuntu on it. I downloaded the install for the kubuntu 9.10, but haven't done anything with it yet.

I've got almost 2 years of Gnome and 0 with KDE, anything I should know going in?

I think a good computer user try to use all kind of sw and get an opinion by yourself. KDE is not very different to Gnome, functionally speaking.

    Btw i'd prefer gnome.

what do you mean by "sw"?

and i plan to begin using it regardless of what this thread tells me, i was just wondering if anyone thought there was a heads-up worth giving.

I'd recommend you pop up System Settings and go through each section, just to familiarize yourself with the knobs there.

Also, remember that there are several packages that you can install for extra KDE functionality, apps and art. Much like GNOME has gnome-games (and similar), KDE has kdegames, kdegraphics, kdeadmin, kdenetwork, kdeaccessibility, kdeartwork, kdeedu, kdemultimedia, kdepim, kdetoys, kdeutils, and kdewallpapers.

There are also extra plasma goodies in packages beginning with plasma-. You'll find that you may just want to install Synaptic even in KDE, unless you're confident with the terminal aptitude or apt-get.

Lastly, you can get extra nifties and upgrades if you add Sam Rog's ppa (ppa:samrog131/ppa).

The Kubuntu devs also provide updated packages in the Kubuntu ppas when the Canonical/Ubuntu release schedule and packaging rules don't allow them to add it to the main repositories. Depending on how much you enjoy the bleeding edge, you may not want to add the beta backports. (That's where 4.4rc1 is hosted, and while I'm not having many issues with it, it's still a release candidate and should be treated as such.)

After exploring, just purge what you don't want and use what you want to use.
