It then hangs at the 'blue stripped' login screen, but I only get the screen, no login info, text entry box, etc. Only a blue screen.
That's odd. Try creating the usb stick with UNetbootin & see if it does the same thing?

Also, if you try again with startup disk creator don't create a persistence file, select the option where it saves nothing.

Yea, I've tried: 2 different USB sticks, 2 different USB ports, and tried both with and without persistence. But....now I'll try unetbootin! Will report back soon.

What video card do you use aeronutt? Might need to try some of the boot options.

    You're good...

I've had many problems loading/running 11.04 due to my dual graphics card, one being an ATI/AMD. So, here's how I got v2 loaded:

Using unetbootin, booting from USB, selecting 'try ubuntu', and (by hitting Tab key) editing the boot command and adding "radeon.modeset=0" to the end of the boot line, I successfully booted v2, then installed.

Have now gone through the installation steps, and am getting the 'something failed, log out' screen when I log in. But from what I've read, that's simply a conflict with some of the extensions. I can work through that.

Bottom line, I'm pretty sure I'm good to go now.

Thanks for the great ideas and help!!!!!

I think 23dornot23d discovered that fix when he was working around the 64-bit Natty Gnome login problems. Glad it appears to be working now.

The installation I'm currently using was a fresh v2 install just a few days ago. I'm pretty pleased with it but IF I do a v3 it will probably be sans extensions & themes.

Its good to include the extensions ..... maybe compressed ..... or .....

We really need a small script that unpacks them in stages ... and another to remove them
if they do not work as we expect them to ......

it should be easy enough to remove them from here as normal user privileges can do that.
or we could advise which seem to have more chance and put a list giving an order
to the more like ly to work

    home/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/

I always start with 2 ..... that are sound ....
( not really had any problems with these 2 lately )

    Themeselector
    Userthemes

( next should maybe be ...... what others on here get working everytime )

    Workspace switcher

    Move Date/Clock

    etc .....

The weather one I would put last as these are always difficult to set up and get working properly.

Just initial thoughts after seeing what you wrote ......

Yeah, a script or launcher would be the preferred method. Maybe a script that moves them from /usr/local to ~/.themes & ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions . I might play with that when I have some patience.

Wish I could help here but my script writing is basic to say the least ..... just a list of
commands one after the other is all I have really done before for resizing and moving photos maybe if
I dig that one out it will be suitable or similar to what we need here.

As its just picking the filenames we already know and moving them somewhere else.

    move /usr/local/themes/(filename) ~/.themes/(filename)

    move /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/(filename) ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/(filename)

If this is what the problem is the extensions and themes being in two places and its
then causing confusion ...... who knows ....

I just know that looking glass does not like it if there are 2 ..... as it flags the error
already loaded ..... but I would not expect this to crash it ....

It should just ignore the second instance of it in the program ......

Yeah, it reports but haven't had it crash here because of double loading.

    Re: gNatty Gnome Live ISO

Some proper error reports are needed out of it so we know where to look to see
why it does crash. Will have a search around on the Net .... there as to be more
information on the errors reported for Gnome Shell .....

Not finding what I want on tracking the errors down
