Question Which is a better processor?

    AMD E-350
(I couldn't find an official AMD spec list but I found this review)
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4023/t...50-benchmarked

    VS

    Intel Core i3-380UM Processor

    Official Specs http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=50028

I'm not very savvy when it comes to CPUS
These are both "lower end" CPUs and they are on two different laptops (well just a step above a netbook really) that I want. But I can't tell which is better

    Please help.

Intel, although I'd get AMD as its more than likely cheaper. More importantly, what are you doing with this laptop? The AMD choice will choke on heavy encoding/processing tasks.

Re: Which is a better processor?

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Well I only ask because I'm debating between these two laptops/netbooks
(at least at the moment unless I find something better in that pricepoint)

    ASUS UL20FT-XA1 Intel
    http://www.amazon.com/UL20FT-XA1-Lig...hu-rd_add_1_dp

    Sony VAIO VPC-YB15KX/S AMD
    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-VPC-YB15K.../ref=de_a_smtd

I will of course be running ubuntu but dual partitioned with windows
However the most resourse intensive task I will be doing is running
MAC OS X Server in Virtualbox. To do this I require Hardware Virtualization
    (or Intel VT-x & AMD-V)
According to the Intel specs that i3 can do it however I'm not 100% sure on the AMD.
Beyond that I'll be surfing web, music, and a lot of GIMP photo editing

Hardware specs aside, Sony Viaos have a 30% market fail rate after 1.5 years. Basically they are designed to fail. Asus on the other hand guarantees their product for at least a year, of which, in the cases I have had to use it, there was never any question, they honour their warranty.

I wouldn't pick either for virtualization. You need more grunt.

Oh wow really? I've never owned a Sony but I've always though they were good just Overpriced lol. I do LOVE asus. My current 1201n eee pc is my first and I wouldn't be looking for a new one if I wasn't needing hardware virtualization

Haha I honestly get this comment a lot. I actually can virtualize Widnows XP - 7 very well on my current Asus Eee PC 1201N which has an Atom 330 processor.
I thank Ubuntu for that! I do ALOT of stuff at once on my NETBOOK that I KNOW I would probably break my system if I was running virtualization + other things under Windows

google 'e350 vs i3' - you'll get plenty of benchmarks. That should help you make up your mind.

To me, no matter what the configuration or the operating system, it seems like AMD is fast and smooth, while I wait forever for an operation to complete on Intel. My old computer with a single core AMD Sempron 2.0GHz runs faster than my new one with 4 Intel i7 processors @ 2.4GHz. (and the hard disk read/write speeds and video cards are very close as well, and they both run Ubuntu so it must be the processor.)
