Could I just reiterate that LXDE looks UGLY. BUt Lubuntu looks fairly nice. So you could at least try Lubuntu from a USB or whatever, that way you might get a fair representation of what LXDE can do. Also bear in mind that Xfce isn't as light as LXDE.
Global menu is unfortunately an Ubuntu-only thing, with some hacks for Xfce.
Choose whatever works for you, just giving an opinion.
