I can't shut down or start ubuntu

I recently upgraded to kubuntu 9.04. Everything was fine, until i shutdown the computer: the screen went black, but neither the monitor or computer shut down. so i powered it off manually.

I rebooted the computer, and after the "kubuntu" screen comes up, the screen went black again, and hung there.

I rebooted again in recovery mode, and it hung again.

So how do i even get into KDM or the base OS? also, why won't it shut down??

i was able to fix this by using GDM instead of KDM.

ok, i fixed it.

i did it with recovery mode. i thought it hung, but there is a point where it processes data for 5-10 minutes, with no progress updates on the screen.

so after that, it recovered the OS, and everything seems to be fine now.

It's really irritating to recover the install twice a day. it takes 15+ minutes to shut down, recover, and boot up again.

Humm, that's weird.

I know sometimes my computer takes a while to shut down, but it's always lightning fast to boot up.

Anyone aware of this issue ?

Did you check the integrity of your Kubuntu CD using the verification function that is found on the initial Kubuntu boot screen menu BEFORE you installed Kubuntu ?

There is a bug report similar to this. It might describe the "black screen" on shutdown. I am having the same problem, but when I start back up I don't have to recover anything.

my computer is unresponsive at the black screen. ctrl-alt-backspace, alt-f2, nothing works.

i know the keyboard is functioning b/c the num lock light still turns on and off.


i thought this was a bug in kdm; there are bug reports of something similar. but apparently it happens in gdm too.
