Prior to 11.10, the password would be prompted for prior to downloading and installing updates. This did not occur for the first set of updates I have installed for 11.10.
It went straight into downloading and updating.
Surely this cannot be right?

all my updates have been the same way since using 11.10.
I to thought it was strange.. but who knows what they did? lol
not had to enter a password once to update with update manager.
through synaptic it asks, but not the regular update manager.
Glad someone else brought it up.

They general updates, so feeling any difference with them is some what negligible for me, it has always been sluggish on my netbook, for several versions now.
In my limited understanding of Linux, not having this prompt for authentication is a security issue, even though it is vendor updates.
Installing apps via software centre however does seem to prompt.

but not update manager, and i thought it was always supposed to.

The update manager always prompted for a password, upto and including 11.04 in my experience and since I started using Ubuntu at around 10.04

Hi! Had the same doubt. It turns out the Update Manager does not ask for passwords any more!
