For many hardcore Ubuntu users, Ubuntu + Gnome 2 + Compiz still represents Desktop Nirvana. For these users, the cliff arrives when 10.04 LTS goes out of support in April, and although there are alternatives, all of them require trade-offs and compromises.
Under the hood, Ubuntu is the most powerful and flexible OS there is and that, in a future of walled gardens and locked down OSes, is worth real money, money which Canonical apparently needs urgently.
So I propose that users dissatisfied with the current direction each pledge to pay a minimum of $100 US, payable in advance, to fund a Premium Edition (Ubuntu + Gnome 2 + Compiz), in return for a copy of the same.
Please post, and pledge here, if you are interested. If sufficient interest is generated, coordination will follow.
Edit: Just to make sure there is no misunderstanding. The idea would be to commit to pay Canonical for the OS if they could be persuaded to produce it.
