I'd say that it's quite likely it would have solved the Op's reboot into low graphics after purging the mir ppa.
(unless he happened to remove or comment out the entry in that file..

My experience is different... But, that should not be general...

I do remeber: „USE THESE AT YOUR OWN RISK. BE PREPARED TO MANUALLY FIX YOUR SYSTEM IF IT BREAKS.“ and I stand warned...
It did nor break... Would not dare in front of me...

We all were properly warned: „USE THESE AT YOUR OWN RISK. BE PREPARED TO MANUALLY FIX YOUR SYSTEM IF IT BREAKS.“...
    It did not break...

Should not these two topics be merged:

After the latest updates, xmir died with signal 6. I have been reported this as a bug. Everything messed up, I cannot even start the display manager, I cannot even switch to a VT. Only SysRq can reboot the system.

Also a test case of Mir native in 13.10 can be found here. Sorry for the poor quality, I must buy a new cam.. some day

    Re: Mir builds for Saucy

Gave up on the mess and did a fresh zsync, fresh install, fumbled around with Ollie's notes and the ppa stuff, wound up with duplicate sources.list entries, and

It's working. Dual cursors and all. I'm using the external monitor as I type. ??

Pretty soon it'll figure out it is not supposed to be working and crash, but not yet.

BTW, anyone trying the unity 8 ppa on top of this mess yet?

Nope, I didn't. I'll remember the next time I give it a try.

This one should give us Unity 8 on top of Mir?

O.K., I'm running the mir thing, dual cursors sluggish keyboard and all, and tried the unity8 ppa, and rebooted. Any pointers on what to do to try unity8?

    Thanks.

BTW, I'm no unity fan, I just run it to report bugs. On my tablets 7" 9" 10" I try to set them to "desktop" where possible.

I guess ATM you could test it on ARM based device but reading this:

    http://iloveubuntu.net/lightdm-174-l...-unity-support

I think Unity 8 could land on some PPA or to be directly available in Ubuntu 13.10 soon. AFAIK this is the plan to have demo Unity 8 session (mobile one) available in Ubuntu 13.10 and because Unity 8 will not talk X11 anymore it will use Mir directly and not XMir anymore! If you have any ARM device you would put Ubuntu on you could use that PPA for test i guess but if u want to test it on your netbook you have to wait a bit more.

    Re: Mir builds for Saucy

On Lubuntu, mir is running unimpeded with only one cursor on a fresh, daily, saucy desktop-i386.

    Code:
    ventrical@ventrical-P4M266A-8237:~$ ps afx | grep unity-system-compositor
     2619 pts/0 S+ 0:00 \_ grep --color=auto unity-system-compositor
    ventrical@ventrical-P4M266A-8237:~$ ps aux | grep unity-system-compositor
    1000 2634 0.0 0.0 5664 816 pts/0 S+ 17:54 0:00 grep --color=auto unity-system-compositor
    ventrical@ventrical-P4M266A-8237:~$ grep -i xmir /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    [ 175.289] xorg-server 2:1.13.3+xmir1-0 (For technical support please see http://www.ubuntu.com/support)
    ventrical@ventrical-P4M266A-8237:~$ ls -l /var/log/lightdm/unity-system-compositor.log
    -rw------- 1 root root 110 Jul 1 17:48 /var/log/lightdm/unity-system-compositor.log
    ventrical@ventrical-P4M266A-8237:~$
    edit

hmmmm .. nope .. I don't think so because xorg is comming up in system monitor.

    edit:

but all other indicators point that it is running ..
