    Memtest Fails

Have HP 6710b laptop with 1GB Ram 160 GB HDD Ubuntu 18.04.1 fresh install.
The machine takes 6 minutes to boot. Have performed both memtests
from grub menu and both after less than a minute shut down the
computer. All programs seem so far to run correctly.
    Any insight appreciated.

memtest should run for 12+ hrs to fully test the RAM for issues.
I've never heard of Ubuntu 84.04.1. Seems about 65 yrs too early.

With 100% good RAM, on a system like that, I'd run Lubuntu at the heaviest.

2 gig stick of RAM can be had for less the $30 US online. Time to order one or two sticks. With 2 gig, Lubuntu would still be my choice and Xubuntu would probably be fine with that as long as you weren't running any heavy programs. With 4 gig, Xubuntu would be great and even Ubuntu should work fine.

I wouldn't throw $10 at an older system like that, much less $30.

A used C2D or better laptop can be found for $80 which will be 5x faster. Let me see what's available refurb on ebay - $20 shipping and $35 bid, so $55 total. Audio jack has a problem, but it is an i3 and 8G of RAM. Sometimes it is best to let old stuff go.

Refurb desktops are even more competitive.

I can verify that Lubuntu works quite well with 2GB. I'm running Lubuntu 18.04 on a 2004-vintage Acer, a 32-bit Centrino-based laptop with Core 2 Duo T2300 CPU and 2GB memory (upgraded from original 1GB). It runs quite well as long as you don't try to overtax it with stuff like full-screen hi-def video. For most things it's fine. It can even runs a Windows XP virtual machine through Virtualbox with acceptable performance.

Haven't tried Lubuntu with a 1GB system but I'd think that would be too cramped if running a GUI and modern web browser.

Overheating is the first thing I suspect with sudden shutdown. When was the last time the system was opened and cleaned?
