    MySQL removed from Slackware

Some may be interested to see that MySQL has been removed from Slackware:

PV has never been one to shy away from big decisions, I am sure many will remember the removal of GNOME a few years ago.

Slackware is not the first though, I believe that at the very least Fedora is going down this path as well:

    as well as OpenSuse...

I'm just curious what they recommend using as a replacement. I really had no idea that Gnome wasn't part of Slackware. That decision seems more outrageous IMO than Mysql

GNOME actually went a couple of years ago but a few external people have continued developing drop-in replacements for it. Most slackers are happy KDE users while malcontents such as myself use other window mangers such as Fluxbox . xfce is very well supported as well.

MYsql has been replaced with MariaDB which I understand is looked after by some of the MYSql people.

Probably MariaDB, heard that name thrown around a lot but I know jack about db systems.

    Re: MySQL removed from Slackware

I never got attached to MySQL when I first started building servers in the late 1990s because it was still under a restrictive license that banned redistribution. I could build a server with MySQL but not sell it to a customer without paying a royalty. At the time the only solid open-source SQL server for Linux was PostgreSQL. I started with that and never looked back. I only install MySQL when a particular web application does not have good support for PostgreSQL, and the number of such applications has thankfully dwindled over time.

I have never trusted Oracle to do the right thing with MySQL so I continue to avoid it today.

    Re: MySQL removed from Slackware

Good to see some "Slackheads" posting in the forums. I really never got interested in Slackware and to be honest with you -- I have no idea why??? I guess if I wanted stability it would be an option, but then I probably would just choose Debian stable. For cutting edge I'm really enjoying my new Arch install -- it's really nice to have the most up-to-date packages. I guess I just never had a niche that Slackware could fit into. It's great however to talk to those that use this "legendary" distro. I keeps my mind fresh!!
