Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

Hi, I'm running the ntfs-3g on Edgy:
    > deb http://givre.cabspace.com/ubuntu/ edgy main
    > ntfs-3g_1%3a0.20061031-BETA-2_i386.deb
    Kernel is:
    > linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic_2.6.17-10.33_i386.deb
    fuse is:
    > fuse-utils_2.5.3-2.1ubuntu4_i386.deb

I just tried using Thunderbird with a profile and Lightning calendar both created under Windows. Tb itself was fine but Lightning caused two Talkbacks and resulted in a folder that was unreadable when I switched back to Windows. Chkdsk found five errors on the drive and fixed them.

Any ideas what I can do to supply more helpful info?

Givré: Yesterday i rolled back my fstab backup and made the changes again, this time invoking fstab with gksu instead of sudo. it worked, and as of today it hasn't failed. I'll pm you if i run into trouble again. Thank you very much for your help!

Hi. I followed every step for read/write support but now the ntfs partitions are read only, even access only ? How can I solve it?

Most chkdsk errors refer to Microsoft NTFS bugs. For example here are some (except the last one), but there are __MUCH__ more:
    http://www.ntfs-3g.org/support.html#usedfreespace
    http://www.ntfs-3g.org/support.html#cleaningup
    http://www.ntfs-3g.org/support.html#minorinconsistency

If you see anything other, then please send the chkdsk output according to
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHKDSK#Viewing_results
and we will investigate and document it.

What OS do you use? This permission problem can happen with Vista but it's unheard with others. Well, unless you created file names what Windows doesn't like very much and needs special utilities to access.

What does "Lightning caused two Talkbacks" mean? Thanks!

Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 and all updates. The filename thing could be it...

Lightning is the calendar plugin for Mozilla Thunderbird. Talkbacks are Mozilla's way of collecting application failure events. They're publicly viewable. The talkback in question isn't very illuminating:
    TB26780763M
Looks to me like the folder had become inaccessible and the application failed to handle it...
