Thanks for the post. Most went well but got this error when installing the '.deb'

:Using mkinitramfs-kpkg to build the ramdisk.
find: /lib/firmware/2.6.23.14: No such file or directory

and , while it booted, it didn't work well. Know where i should look? 'lib/firmware' does not exist for this kernel, by the way.

I am running Edgy with kernel 2.6.15.27-k7. While running kernel check it aborts and gives me the following info while building the new kernel.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libqt3-mt-dev: Depends: libglu1-mesa-dev but it is not going to be installed or libglu-dev Depends: libqt3-headers (=3:3.3.6-3ubuntu3.3) but 3:3.3.8really3.3.7-ubuntu5.2 is to be installed
E; broken package
Unknown Error. Aborting now

I have tried without success to fix the package and/or install missing pieces.

Any help would be appreciated

I recompiled the newest stable kernel and got rid of the mmconfig bios bug...

apparantly the kernel tries to detect the pci-devices in different ways:
through the bios, mmconfig or directly. By setting the way to detect to "direct" , the " not using mmconfig" message disappeared while booting.

You don't need to be (and shouldn't be) root to build the kernel. You can extract it to your $HOME, and give make-kpgk the --rootcmd=fakeroot option. You must have the fakeroot package installed as well.

I recompiled my kernel yesterday, after spending a great amount of time tailoring it. When i rebooted, chronometred the boot time, and it gave me the exact 38 secs i'm used to in my generic kernel. In the system per se, there wasn't any noticeable difference, apart from my sound being messed up. So, the question is, what's the point of recompiling it, apart from the learning experience? Any of you actually got a faster system after the process?

I compiled the new kernel (2.6.24), installed the deb package, everything worked fine...

But when I try to boot this kernel, there is text outputet something like:
"[ .. ]pnpacpi: exceeded the max number of mem resources: 12
Starting up"
Then the boot splash is displayed for five seconds then there is text output:
"[ .. ]usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
[ .. ]usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
[ .. ]usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
[ .. ]usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
[ .. ]usb 2-1: device not accepting address 5, error -71
[ .. ]usb 2-1: device not accepting address 6, error -71"

And then it just hangs there forever...

When booting with kernel 2.6.20 I also get those messages(Except: "[ .. ]pnpacpi: exceeded the max number of mem resources: 12") , but my system is booting completely...
Did anybody have a similar problem?

EDIT: So it looks like it is a problem with my system and dpkg got borked. Now to go fix that.

Running Hardy here. I compiled the kernel, but it won't install sadly. The output implies a possible problem:

Has anyone successfully compiled the 2.6.24 kernel and the nvidia drivers? I compiled the 2.6.24 kernel, but the nvidia drivers won't install. When I try to compile the nvidia kernel modules (either with the nvidia installer or by trying to compile the linux-restricted-modules) it complains that the kernel was compiled to include rivabf support, even though it was not.
