Hey guys,
I recently dug out my old Toshiba SA10 and decided to go into the world of Linux, hoping to extend the life of my poor laptop. I, ofcourse, chose Ubuntu to be my new OS.
I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 and tried running it as a liveCD. I failed miserably, as all I got was a black screen after the usual Ubuntu loading splash.
After doing some digging, I found out about the Maverick version, which, thankfully, installed just fine (well, there was no mouse cursor during installation but w/e...).
The only problem is, it runs DAMN SLOW. I could do almost nothing until I changed my theme. Now I can do text processing and MAYBE some 2D games. Some.
But it's still laggy as hell and I can only dream of running 3D games with a decent framerate (heck, even that penguin mario clone is flickering).
I had WinXP installed previously and I had no problem running games (even some newer ones) so that's definetely not a hardware bottleneck or anything.
Long story short - I installed Ubuntu Maverick and the performance is very poor (even compared to WinXP). I can barely do anything in the graphical interface and would like to find a solution to this problem.
I have a hunch that my Intel 82852/855 graphics card may have something to do but I'm not sure if there's a connection between it and the 100% CPU Usage spikes when doing pretty much anything.
I don't have a lot of Linux experience, although I'm a long time Windows user so I usually know my way around things. Still, help on that would be nice as I have no idea at all how to fix it.
