Hello everyone here's a little background. I bought a laptop (my first) off of a friend of a friend for $30. It was pretty decent except it had a cracked LCD screen. So I ordered a new one off of eBay and it got here today, I was able to replace it and got rid of the AWFULLY slow and just overall terrible Windows Vista. It is a 1.73ghz dual core Intel Pentium (not core duo I guess, just normal pentium?) 1GB (DDR2 553?) RAM, 160GB hard drive, 15.4" screen, nothing too special, but it's kind of slow for Windows, so I thought I'd roll with Ubuntu 10.04. I had always dabbled with it in VirtualBox on my desktop, but never had it as a pure install. So I thought I would do it.

I'm all running now, installation was seamless and Linux is just freaking pro, I can TeamViewer into my Windows desktop, I have everything I need and I have about 5 hours battery life. I'm very impressed with Linux as a full time OS, (I still play some games on Windows and run some proprietary software, so I can't get rid of Windows all together) however I have one very small insignificant problem that I would like to fix if at all possible.

Whenever I turn on my laptop, it shows the Compaq splash screen with the option to press fwhatever and go into the BIOS, then it goes to a black screen for...eh...10 seconds? Then some text comes up for about 1 second (some fscheck I think, I could take the picture of it if you really need to) and then it goes off to a black screen for another...eh...3 seconds I don't know, I hear the Ubuntu sound and it goes into my desktop....Hello? Where is my purple Ubuntu screen with the little dots during the boot? When I hit shutdown, I get that screen with the little dots going the other way (i.e. shutdown) So how can I get it to show up for startup?

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!
