10.04 installed but not launching. black screen after splash

This seems to be a real and critical bug in ubuntu 10.04. It affects anyone with an intel 82852 or 855GM graphics chip

Here is a temporary solution which worked for me:
- Get into the grub menu by holding down escape when the computer is loading. (I think you can also do this by holding down shift).
- Select recovery mode
- Choose "Run ubuntu in low graphics / failsafe mode"
- Hopefully this allows you to log in.
- If it did work, then go Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal, and type:
> cd /etc/X11
> sudo cp xorg.conf.failsafe xorg.conf

This should make your computer run with the same graphics settings as in failsafe mode. You won't be able to change the display resolution etc.


Hopefully some someone smart will fix this bug soon.

Hi all,

I found that my xorg.conf was entirely missing! Not sure how this happened as all I did was an upgrade via the Update Manager but somehow that file was nuked.

Created it with a duplicate of the xorg.conf.failsafe and it booted fine.

Hope that helps other Intel 855GM users.

still the same problem on jaunty, karmic, lucid with these old Intel cards.

they never worked with the new driver (from jaunty).

downgrade to driver 2.4

I had given up on it after trying a load of different workarounds. Decided to give it another go today and found that re-enabling kms, as described on the wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes, works.

Onl problem i have now is that when i play videos on movie player the screen goes black and crashes.

I want to try the i915.modeset=1 add to the grub boot menu.lst but I am running via liveCD ( 9.10 ) since I cannot boot 10.04 ( see other posts on this 855 pr0oblem) . I can edit the menu.lst file but cannot save as I do not have permissions!! How can I do this?

If have an account with limited privileges, you can boot with the live CD pass the shell command with elevated privileges.
