@KeLa, I was using indicator applet as u mentioned but I think it is really useless.

I'm also waiting for another solution.
Just got my Toshiba Portege R100 upgraded and volume control icon was gone but
when i just selected "Remove from panel" and added "Indicator Applet" back again all was fine and volume icon was back.

Noticed that wlan indicator was gone from panel and added "Notification Area" to the panel it was back and reboot didn't remove them.

Re: 10.4 no volume control applet

    To fix

    Right Click on the panel
    Select "Add to Panel"
    Add Indicator Applet

Apparently during an upgrade Gnome likes to hang on to some setting that tells it you do not want the new volume indicator to show. By adding it again it refreshes and it "should" show up

The same process will fix if you are missing the -me menu. Just add Indicator Applet Session,

If this does not work check that you have the following packages installed.

    indicator-me
    indicator-sound
    indicator-session
    indicator-applet-session
    indicator-applet

Re: 10.4 no volume control applet

    Thanks for the replies.
So it looks like there are separate panel applets now.

    Indicator applet
    - battery
    - volume
    - email/chat
    Notification area
    - wlan
    - keyboard layout
    - other programs, e.g. skype

I find this a bit anoying, because I don't want the email/chat icon, but it automatically comes with the volume and battery controls.
Also the icons are spaces differently in the two applets, making the panel less beautiful.

Does any one know how to get rid of the email/chat without losing volume control?

    EDIT
I found a solution to get rid of the email icon, by removing the specific software package. have a look here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...71#post9204671

Isn't there one with volume but not email? I use Thunderbird instead of Evolution, which doesn't integrate with the email button.

Re: 10.4 no volume control applet

I don't care about email or chat notifications, so I added the volume control back to the notification area by putting:
    gnome-volume-control-applet
in my startup applications. Works just like it used to in 9.10 now.

AFAICT, the icon on that isn't configurable. Actually, it isn't as nice generally.

All these applets really need to be split up so each one does one thing and one thing only. Then I could simply have the volume one and remove the email and IM ones. While I'm whining, Indicator Applet Session could do with some configurability. After removing indicator-me, the username is no longer shown next to the "power button" icon

I don't like this double featured area either... Is there a way to manually remove the envelope icon?

    Thanks Razmear it works great.
I just don't understand why this applet can't be chosen from the applets list.
