    Toshiba L505-ES5033

I've been on #Ubuntu asking for a while now and am about at the conclusion that my gfxc is not supported.

Initially the problem was with installing Ubuntu. When the LiveCD was placed in it would load the Ubuntu menu that gives the options such as "install, help, advanced, try without changes". Upon selecting anything that attempts to install or run the operating system I would get a few pages of echoes that are impossible to read (moving to quickly) and the last line mentions something about "MTRR Allocation Failed". At this point it seems to go into standby mode, just a dark but-not-powerless screen. I managed to get it installed by using the text based alternate installer. After Ubuntu was installed Trying to boot Ubuntu or the Recovery mode resulted in the exact same issue as when trying to install it. I've tried nearly every MTRR related kernel parameter I can find, multiple vga modes, removing splash. Nothing seems to be making the slightest difference whatsoever.

The specs for the laptop can be found at http://laptops.toshiba.com/laptops/s...00/L505-ES5033. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a very similar laptop, a Toshiba L505-ES5018. I haven't studied the specs in depth, but at first glance it looks the same as yours but with 3GB of RAM rather than 4GB and a different (but still Intel) CPU. I don't happen to have Ubuntu on that system, though; I copied an OpenSUSE installation from another laptop and then did a fresh install of Funtoo. Funtoo is very different from Ubuntu; it's good for somebody interested in geeky details, but if Ubuntu is about your style, you probably wouldn't like it. You might want to give OpenSUSE a try, though; it's similar to Ubuntu in broad strokes, and if it's more reliable on this hardware, switching distributions might be a reasonable solution. Of course, if somebody posts a simple solution within Ubuntu, you should try that first!

I am in the same situation. I recently purchased the machine and even attempted defecting to Kubuntu in the hope that it might work instead. No luck!

Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated. I suppose I could've done more product research, but I've installed on so many others without any problems that I wrongly assumed it would work.
