    mkv refuses to start playing

Maybe I'm being dense but I recently switched my AAO netbook from eeebuntu 3.0 (based on 9.04 JJ) to 9.10 NBR.

Alls gone to plan apart from a few minor niggles except I now can't render mkv files. Mplayer says it cant start playback - do I have permission (i do) and VLC fails aswell.

on the eebuntu OS I could play back MKV so what have I forgotton to install?

I've got restricted-extras and w32codec (which I did have on 9.04 but searching these forums suggested that might solve it)

mkv files take a lot of processing power to play, and even then they usually don't play very well. My suggestion would be to convert it to an avi file with ffmpeg. Here is a good video conversion tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIalNEW-LQ8&fmt=18

Maybe installing the Mplayer codecs will help
