Skype text scrambled, garbled, messed up

Having a problem with skype in ubuntu, my text is all garbled. atached screenshot.

As you can see, the window decorator's text is fine, i smudged out my username in the title bar, but the word "SkypeTM" is visible, after the username. all text everywhere else is fine. even wine fonts are working (corefonts installed) in eve-online, steam etc... though that would have no bearing as this is the ubuntu packaged skype.

Any help much appreciated, i hope i posted this in the right spot in the forums. tell me where if i should be posting this elsewhere.

I've tried a few things now, did a purge of skype and a reinstall, still comes up the same way, so at this stage i'm still not sure what it is that is causing my problems.

Just noticed even the text on the task tray menu that pops up on right clicking the skype icon has the same garbled text issues. Really annoying.

Anyone have any clue.
