going crazy - newby trying to make a DVD home movie

I just lost two hours of my life trying to take my *.mpg files and make a DVD to play on a normal player.

Nothing fancy, just string some mpg files and burn a disc formatted such that I can pop it into a DVD player and have it play

Am I asking too much? Does linux just not do this sort of thing?!

I tried K3b, Open Movie Editor, AcidRip... nothing worked.

I'm soooooo frustrated and would appreciate some help.

    Thanks

    I got todisc

Not entirely sure how it works. I haven't used it yet. But I read good things about it. So why not try?

Thanks! I downloaded it and messed around. It *looks* perfect, but I was unable to burn anything. I couldn't find a tutorial online either.

    It looks really nice

However, when I try to add my *.mpg or *.mpeg files, they show up as icons with "Error" written across them. I'm looking through the help menu but if you have any ideas please let me know.

I was able to add menu pics btw

    sigh

I have used devede (in the repositories) to make iso's of what movies I want and generally it works quite well and is very simple. You might try that. It has no real fancy menu builders etc. (at least not yet) but is good for a simple dvd iso file build.

    Thanks for the encouragement Chad

devede looked very promising. When I burned the iso (using k3b) and popped it in my cd player it gave a "disk unplayable" note. I have used this dvd player with the same disks to read data files so I know the disc and the player are unlikely to be problems.

I don't have mkisofs installed and can't seem to find it. Reading the documentation it appears I may need that. Did you need to get it, if so, how did you do it?

    Thanks again

Re: going crazy - newby trying to make a DVD home movie

hmm, not sure... only did a direct install ... it seems that dvd+rw-tools replaces the mkisofs packages. Actually never tried it with a cd or cd player, just have made dvd's from some movie files over time and they play fine on my dvd player (Note: a home made dvd will NOT play on players on game machines, etc. due to I think DRM restrictions)
