8.10 ATI graphics - Radeon 9000 Mobile

I am not able to use anything but "low graphics mode" with 8.10, I assume this is the VESA driver. I have tried fglrx, ati, and radeon (which I have read is loaded by the ati driver). I get the same errors with the ati and the radeon drivers, the fglrx driver shows that the device isn't supported in the xorg logs. Acceleration with the radeon driver was working in 8.04. I has the same issue while upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10, I was getting the fail safe display (800*600). I've removed the "fglrx" driver for ATI and installed X.Org X server -- ATI Radeon display driver. Now my display is working properly (back to 1024*768)

There are few threads about this problem. If I understand it correctly, there are certain ATI Radeon cards that the fglrx drivers won't support in the 8.10 release, at least in 3D anyway. I have an ATI Radeon 9000 and a 9500 pro, so I'm suffering too.

The solution seems to be to run the open drivers. Basically not allowing you to fully accelerate the cards.

I'm currently having to switch distributions due to this issue.

Well, but the ati driver should have 2D acceleration at least for the 9000M as I understand it. I am not even attempting to use fglrx anymore as it does report in the xorg logs that the 9000M is not supported.

rajgangadharan, I've tried that as well, and I think you have a newer ATI video card, because my problem was a little different (I had the correct resolution in low-graphics mode, and using the ati or radeon drivers doesn't help, fglrx has been removed).

Doesn't 8.10 use XOrg 7.4, which ATI does not have drivers for yet (they will probably be released in November)? That might be your problem with the proprietary drivers.

I'm not using fglrx, I'm using radeon, which is free. The R200 series of chips are completely broken in fglrx now, so I don't attempt to use it.

I'm not using virtualbox, but dkms reports that fglrx installed, although I am not requesting to use it in my xorg.conf.

fglrx no longer supports R200 chips, which the Radeon 9000M is based on.

My main problem is DRI doesn't find my video adapter, as evidenced by the log I posted:

Re-installed 8.10 from scratch, and this issue is solved.
