Exclamation 8.04 Hardy Intel Chipset i945GM problems. (not the screen resolution one)

    Main Question
i use the i945GM chipset graphics card from Intel.
What driver should i use under Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy?

    BACKSTORY:
Hi! i installed ubuntu 8.04 Hardy on my Hp laptop (the dv5218nr) a few weeks ago. the specs can be found here:
    Laptop Specs

before you all go and hoot and hollar, i know its the not the best but it was what my parents could afford at the time and failed to ask for any of my input on buying me a comp.

its been running fairly well out-of-the-box, with a few exceptions (all of which have been fixed) Huge text at login screen, missing driver for broadcom wireless, and a few other little tweaks not really worth mentionining here.

for performance, i cant really complain. untill i decieded i would like to get back into playing WoW. so i installed WINE and got WoW up and running like a charm, with a little Winefix, and a few other tweaks.

    MEAT OF THE QUESTION:
when i load up WoW, there are two graphical issues i think are associated with my graphics card driver.

    1) the ground is white. doing a gui-reload inside wow fixes this problem, but makes the ground mono-texture when outside. ie: there are no roads, or lake-beds. its all either grass, or dirt. when inside a town with cobblestone or brick, or building, it is fine.
    2) the characters, and other objects, all turn white upon entering a building. the tables, chairs, other toons, NPC, even the minimap all go white. (the minimap part lead me to believe it was the graphics driver)

    3339 frames in 5.0 seconds = 667.660 FPS
    3329 frames in 5.0 seconds = 665.789 FPS

    Back to Main Question:
so what is the best graphics driver should i be using for my laptop?
in game with Windows, i get about 20~40 fps outside with 15~30 in town depending on the level of other character interactment.
also, i dont think my glxgears should be that low. i have other people saying that theirs is over 1600, or even 22000 with a high end comp (with a little more ram than mine i know, along with some other buffed up specs.) 666 just seems low to me.
my direct rendering seems to be on, but i read somewhere that if you see 'mesa' driver with a intel chipset its actually not and going through software rendering. i cannot backtrack to the post unfortunately, but i do remember putting in a command and seeing my direct rendering: yes, but then seeing the mesa driver thing as well...

**please note: the only reason i am posting this is because i have spent the last two days searching the forums, so i dont think it exists, but feel free to re-direct me to the correct forum post, or forum directory.

    ANY input is appreciated. thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

upon some instruction went and looked at the Xorg.0.log file. apparently i have errors while loading my driver.

Re: 8.04 Hardy Intel Chipset i945GM problems. (not the screen resolution one)

I have experienced that huge font on the log on screen. It has something to do with the monitor you are using.

    Laptop screen is fine.
At home I plug my laptop into my 19" screen and it's fine.

At university they have some Acer 17" models and when I use them the font for the username and password entry box is massive, one letter takes the whole box.

My guess is the monitor may be giving you the wrong dot per inch value. I have no idea how to fix it though.

About the Intel graphics drivers. There are 2 as far as I know. the "i810" and the "intel". i810 is old and obsolete (didn't support widescreen among other things), replaced by the newer intel one so you will be using that.

About your WoW problems, have you tried to see if any other games suffer the same glitches.

Some other fixes for the Intel 945GM is to disable FramebufferCompression (fixes problems with external monitors), add XAANoOffscreenPixmaps for dynamic touchpad configuration and virtual screen size for dualscreen in Compiz (max virtual size is limited to 2048x2048 with Compiz). You can also force the "intel" driver too in case it used the "i810" instead. eg:
    Code:
    Section "InputDevice"
    	Identifier	"Generic Keyboard"
    	Driver "kbd"
    	Option "XkbRules"	"xorg"
    	Option "XkbModel"	"pc105"
    	Option "XkbLayout"	"us"
    	Option "XkbVariant"	"euro"
    	Option "XkbOptions"	"lv3:ralt_switch"
    EndSection

    Section "InputDevice"
    	Identifier	"Configured Mouse"
    	Driver "mouse"
    	Option "CorePointer"
    EndSection

    Section "InputDevice"
    	Identifier	"Synaptics Touchpad"
    	Driver "synaptics"
    	Option "SendCoreEvents"	"true"
    	Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
    	Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
    	Option "HorizEdgeScroll"	"0"
    	Option "SHMConfig" "True"
    EndSection

    Section "Device"
    	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
    	Option "FramebufferCompression"	"off"
    	Driver "intel"
    	Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
    	Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
    	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier	"Default Screen"
    	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    	Device "Configured Video Device"
    	SubSection "Display"
    		Virtual 2048 2048
    	EndSubSection
    EndSection

    Section "ServerLayout"
    	Identifier	"Default Layout"
    	Screen "Default Screen"
    	InputDevice	"Synaptics Touchpad"
    EndSection

Sorry my post is of very little help for your actual problems but try out other games like Alien Arena (based off Quake 3 engine). If it's WoW specific then you can post it in the Wine section where people know more about it.

that i actualy know how to fix. as i dont have access to the how to i have saved, Ill send you a pm later with instructions on the workaround for it. it has to do with the dpi settings not getting loaded until the X-session actually logs you in, and not when it starts.

i do have widescreen capabilities on my laptop monitor, so i assume im using the "intel" driver then. how do i check which driver ubuntu loaded?
i will check a different game tonight, and see if the same issue occures. if it does, i will re-post. thanks for the re-direct!

thanks for all the help and time to read my post. ill re-post and re-direct my question if there is any evidence that the problem lies within wine.

Re: 8.04 Hardy Intel Chipset i945GM problems. (not the screen resolution one)

The X server in Hardy has a lot more automation so the xrog.conf file has less stuff in it. This makes it a bit harder do play with since there is nothing there.
To tell you the truth, I have no idea how to find out what driver it is using. There was a hardware configuration GUI somewhere back in Ubuntu 7.10, you can try to find that in the repository. Other than that you can just force it to use the "intel" driver in xorg.conf.
Remember to make a BACKUP of xorg.conf. I cannot stress how important this is if everything suddenly dies.
