Question Ubuntu starting up took over 10 minutes

hi, I am a new user of Ubuntu. Since I installed Ubuntu 8.0.4, the starting up processing always take over 10 minutes each time.

I updated the kernel from 2.6.24 to 2.6.25, the problem remains.

In 2.6.24, it stays at "Starting up.." for over 10 minutes.
In 2.6.25, it stays at "Starting up. Booting the kernel" for over 10 minutes.

I have kept all the dmesg files. Could someone be able to help please?

    thanks,
    jinhua

Here are some links to help out
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=254263 - my favorite
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=89491 - also good

Also, is there something that is holding up the boot sequence, like a service that won't load? During the boot sequence with the Ubuntu logo and status bar, hit ALT+F1 and see where it gets stuck.

The same thing was happening to me.
I had it installed on an older 20GB IDE hard drive.
Turns out the drive was going bad.
Replaced with a newer 120 GB drive and now ubuntu boots in about 1 minutes.
